The Prince's Return: Ganguly’s Timely Comeback and Leadership Qualitie

It has been a long time, but now the prince is back. Just one match ago, many questioned whether he still had the ability to perform at this level. While some well-wishers expressed their doubts, citing the challenging conditions of a Test match in South Africa, I was certain that this was the right time for Sourav Ganguly to make his mark. Not that he has anything left to prove — his legacy speaks for itself.

I recall when I used to talk about Sachin Tendulkar to my friends during college days (I’m a huge fan), they would compare him to Ganguly, often citing Tendulkar’s consistency. Now, those same people have changed their opinions. What they overlooked was that, as players mature, experience becomes more valuable than mere aggression. To be aggressive, it needs to be sustained, not just a flash in the pan — like the one-off bursts India experienced during the 2003 World Cup, which ultimately backfired.

Now, returning to Ganguly, this is the perfect moment for his resurgence, and here’s why:

  1. Resilience in Tough Situations – Ganguly has always had the ability to fight back in difficult situations. His century in the first match against Australia, for example, led India to victory and instilled confidence in the team.

  2. Test Match Comfort – Test cricket offers Ganguly the time and space he needs. Unlike in limited-overs cricket, where urgency is key, Test cricket allows him to settle in, and this extended time in the middle will bring out the Ganguly we’ve always known — the one who can effortlessly dispatch the ball for huge sixes.

  3. Inspiring Leadership – Ganguly has always been a leader who gets the best out of his players. His leadership during the NatWest Series final or the iconic final against Pakistan in Dhaka proves his ability to instill belief in the team and motivate them to win against all odds.

In my opinion, this is the right time for Ganguly to lead again, not just because of his experience, but because he has the natural leadership qualities that can guide this team to success.
